It’s August, it’s hot, and Iowa State Fair is going on. I really miss going with my friends. Especially last year, when I went with my college roommate and we drank before noon. We tend do that a lot when we’re together. We’re not exactly mature sometimes. Our friendship spans nearly 20 years and some things never change. We still dive into the drinks and we still spread all of our beauty products out so we can see what the others are using. On our last girls weekend, my friends got me hooked on the Ordinary and now I’m obsessed! Missing my friends and our “get ready to go out” parties got me thinking about all the beauty products that all of us own. And that made me realize, I’d better do a blog post about all the beauty products that every girl needs. So here it is- a list of my friend’s and my favorites that will work for anyone:
MAC Eyeshadow in Vex: I blame Brandy (my college roommate) for this. This was my first MAC purchase as a broke AF 20 year old college student and since then, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve repurchased. It’s the best eyeshadow color ever and I wear it constantly. It’s a grayish, greenish, pinkish sheen. Does that sound like a lot? I don’t know how else to explain it. Best of all, it picks up whatever color you’ve used with it. I’ve worn this with browns, grays, blues, and plum colored shadows. If you can only afford one prestige brand eyeshadow, get this!
Morphe Continuous Setting Mist: I’ve tried other makeup sprays before and hated them. They spritz out and leave drops on your face. Not cool. But as a person with oily skin, I need all the help I can get in this humidity. I bought this a few weeks ago and I love it. It’s a really fine mist and it’s aerosol so it doesn’t go on weirdly. We went out to the farmers market and walked around downtown Little Rock in the extreme heat today and my makeup stayed put.
L’Oreal Volumizing Mascara Primer: I used to think mascara primers were dumb. I tried a few expensive products and truthfully, they didn’t do much. One of my friends recommended this and now I’m a convert. I swipe this on before I use any mascara and it really helps to make my lashes look better! I have pretty wimpy lashes and someone recently asked me if I was wearing false lashes. Best of all, this is only $6.97!
Milani Eyeshadow Primer: I used to use the Urban Decay expensive primer and got this to try. This little tube lasts about 6 months and it’s only $6.99. I forgot to use it last week and my eyeshadow was off by noon. I’ve converted several of my friends to this as well!
Benefit Hoola Bronzer: I confess I generally hate bronzers. Most of them are really orange or shimmery and make my fair, oily skin look like Oompa-Loompa. I got this after another fair skinned friend recommended it. It’s matte and neutral so it doesn’t make you look like a pumpkin or Snooki on Jersey Shore. I know it’s almost Pumpkin Spice Season but that’s getting out of hand anyway. Keep the pumpkin off your face!
Senegence Lipsense in Praline Rose. I love Lipsense! It’s the only lipstick or gloss that I wear anymore. This color works on everyone no matter their skintone. It’s a perfect nude/light lipstick and it will work for any season. If you know someone who sells Senegence, call them and I bet they have it on hand.
Those are just a few of the universal beauty products that my friends and I love. We all have different skin types and tones, but these are the products that seem to work on everyone. The Milani and L’oreal products can be purchased at your local Walmart or Target if you want to. Otherwise, head to Ulta to get them all. Except the Lipsense- get that from your local distributor and support a small business.
What else is happening? We’ve had a pretty low key weekend as usually. Friday night we watched the latest episode of No One Saw a Thing. True crime fascinates me. This is a documentary on a murder that happened in Skidmore, Missouri. The town bully is shot to death, sixty people witness it and no one will say who did it. It’s nearly 40 years later and the case is still unsolved. It’s crazy! I’m also into the podcast Hell and Gone. Catherine Townsend is from Arkansas and is a PI in New York City. She comes back to Arkansas to open cold cases. One of them took place around Mountain View, which is about an hour and a half from where we live. In fact, one guy talked about getting the phone call about the murder while he was driving in Cabot right next to Greystone. (Greystone is the subdivision we live in!) It’s blowing my mind that this happened! I’ve learned a little about how to avoid being murdered too- don’t get into drugs and don’t have more than one significant other. That’s when murders happen. Write that down.
Have a great weekend and buy some new beauty products! Or if you’re in Iowa, go have fun at the State Fair for me!
